The Admissions Process


The Rafael Hernández Dual Language school is a New York City Department of Education public school and follows all admissions procedures of the NYCDOE.  Prospective students and parents must attend an orientation in addition to submitting an official NYCDOE application.


Elementary Admissions for the 2020-2021 School Year

For admissions to the 2020-2021 school year, the Rafael Hernández Dual Language school is an Educational Option school.  This means that prospective applicants for Kindergarten will need to agree to receive instruction in two languages: English and Spanish; and apply through the DOE Kindergarten Admissions process.

Middle School Admisssions for the 2020-2021 School Year

For admissions to the 2020-2021 school year, the Rafael Hernández Dual Language school is an Educational Option school.  This means that prospective applicants for Middle School will need to bring ELA/Math test scores, report cards, and attendance records to the interview, if available.

P.S./I.S. 218 Spanish Dual Language Magnet Program

Eligibility Description
Open to students and residents of the Bronx who want a Dual Language Program (English & Spanish).

Admissions Method
Screened: Language

Selection Criteria
As a screened: language program the school also considers factors:
  • Attendance
  • ELL Status
  • Home Language
  • On-Site Assessment

Middle School Admissions for Current Students

All current P.S./I.S. 218  5th grade students will be enrolled to attend 6th grade, YOU MUST submit a Middle School Choice Application through myschools.nyc. PIN numbers to register for myschools.nyc are available at the guidance counselor’s office.

Admissions for Non-NYC Students

For all admissions from outside of New York City, families must visit a Family Welcome Center. For more information, visit a Family Welcome Center.
